The November 2009 Minutes submitted by Jessica Ashman:Minutes of the Berks County Green Party November 10, 2009 The Hard Bean Cafe 6th and Penn Sts. West Reading, PA 7pm Present: Jessica Ashman, David Kurzweg Meeting called to order at 7:11 pm. I. State Meeting A. Jessica gave a recap of the state meeting held in Hazleton last month. 1. Carl Romanelli gave an update on his legal status. 2. Jay Sweeney gave an update of the Marcellus Shale issue. II. State Convention A. Jessica gave an update from the Steering Committee about the State Convention. 1. Most likely to be held in Allegheny County at a Campground. a. Big conference rooms, cheap food and overnight accommodations. 2. Dates decided to be Feburary 20-21. 3. 2010 candidates to be announced as well as nominations for the new steering committee. III. PA Progressive Summit A. Michael Morril will be hosting PA's first ever Progressive Summit in Harrisburg January 29th-30th in Harrisburg. B. Jessica and Dave talked of possibly tabling for the PA/Berks Green Party at this event, Jessica will email Mike to find out if tabling is permitted. C. Event includes Fundraisers, Exhibit Hall, and speakers. IV. Randi Peters has turn down her position as Co-Chair due to various other commitments. A. Dave will check our by-laws as to how to proceed. B. Technically, new Steering Committee members to be nominated at December meeting, if there are enough attendees. V. PO BOX A. Dave Kurzweg has the key for the PO Box and checks it monthly. VI. Stop the Quarry, Save the Farm A. Issue in Lehigh County, where a cement quarry is trying to build on a local farm. B. Jessica has been in contact with this contact person. C. Was unable to attend the last zoning meeting, but will try to attend the December meeting. D. Will also contact others to write a press release on this issue, if not Jessica will write one herself. VII. Keep Public Libraries Open A. Dave has been involved in petitioning signatures to keep Reading's public libraries open. B. Bottom line is they will stay open, hours just may be reduced. VIII. General Discussion of Local Election Results and Local Politics. IX. Capitalism, A Love Story A. Dave saw this documentary, and would like to show this at a future meeting. B. He will look into a cheap venue where this can be possible. C. Also Recommended seeing "Pollywood", a film about how Politicians influence Hollywood stars. X. Event at RACC (Reading Area Community College) A. Charter for Compassion, held November 15th at 11am-12pm, 2nd and Front Sts., Penn Room in Berks Hall B. Will have statements by spiritual leaders about the core value of compassion which sits at the heart of many world wisdom traditions. XI. Alternative News and Views A. Is a show that airs on BCTV (Berks County TV) the last Monday of every month at 8pm. B. Dave appeared as a guest to discuss issues as to why people don't vote, ballot access issues, and the Voters Choice Act. C. Pam Gockley is the host, who is also the president of League of Women Voters. D. John Sellers also appeared. E. One can find all the programs listed on the BCTV website. F. Jessica and Dave talked of contacting Carl Romanelli to make an appearance on the show, to speak of his legal issues running as a third party candidate, as well as Bob Small, who is on the Ballot Access Committee. XII. Future Event Ideas A. Have an event where we can view Carl Romanell's documentary, and then have Carl speak afterwards. XIII. Low Attendance A. Jessica is going to email the berks county green list serv to remind them of meetings, and to let them know that BCGP may stop meeting for a while if attendance remains the same (unfortunatley). B. Hillary Kane and Bob Small from the Steering Committee plan on attending our next meeting as part of Steering Committee's outreach plan. C. After this meeting we will decide if we want to stop meeting for a certain period of time. 1. This will depend on attendance, and/or if future candidates step up to run in 2010.
