The December 2009 Minutes submitted by Jessica Ashman:Minutes of the Berks County Green Party Meeting Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 at 7pm The Hard Bean Cafe 6th and Penn Sts. West Reading, PA Present: Shirley Fisher, David Kurzweg, Randi Peters, Hillary Kane. (Jessica Ashman was unable to attend, Randi Peters took notes.) Meeting called to order at 7:04 pm. I. Local Elections A. Hillary congratulated Randi on being elected Auditor 2 year term and Minority Inspector for the Election Board. B. Randi is accepting the Auditor position and not the Minority Inspector position since one person can not do both for Maidencreek Township. C. It was reported that other Greens throughout the state have won Auditor and other various offices. D. It was suggested that all Green Party Auditors elected should work together througout the state. 1. IE: Switching township buildings to a more sustainable energy method, etc. E. The short list of candidates for 2010 will be presented at the Sunday meeting during the February Convention. II. Philadelphia Greens A. Hillary Kane, chair of the PA Green Party attended the Berks Meeting as part of the Steering Committee's Outreach Plan. B. She updated the group on the status of the Philadelphia Greens as well as naming candidate hopefuls. III. Upcoming Events A. Thomas Merton (of the Thomas Merton Peace Center in Pittsburgh) is being scheduled for a presentation in Philly (joining "Philly Against the War), on MLK day, January 16th, 3PM. 1. This date is also the 1 year Obama as president anniversary. 2. Talk will be of the status of the Peace Movement. 3. Thomas Merton plans to run for US State Senate. B. The GP State Convention 1. Plans are being made and it hopefully will be held at a Boy's Camp in Pittsburgh, which is affordable and versatile. IV. Cumberland County Greens A. They have officially dissolved, unfortunately, due to very low numbers of attendees. B. It was encouraged that other local parties still meet, (however small), the benefits still outweighing the non-benefits. C. Berks County was encouraged to remain active, maybe just have lesser meetings a year, until more interest arises. D. Benefits including: no costs to remain active, the importantance of meeting on a face to face basis, the paperwork for the Berks bylaws is something Dave said he can and will keep up with. V. Ballot Access/Voters Choice Act A. According to the current system, Third Party 2010 signature requirements is "only" 19,000, which seems do-able in light of past signature requirements. B. There is a Voters Choice Act Committee working on passing fairer laws for third parties. C. Hearing to be held in Philadelphia, Hillary will uddate group via email. VI. David Kurzweg's Updates A. A potential Berks candidate in the works, he will update the group on how things develop. B. The city of Reading is run by the state (per Act 47). 1. Hillary mentioned how in Philly there was a similar situation in the 90's. C. Eron Lloyd's Land Tax Report was read by the City of Reading. D. Dave made an appearance on Berks County TV for ballot access. 1. One can see his appearance on BCTV.org archives. 2. He appeared with Pam (Dean Hornberger's wife)who is President of the League of Women's Voters. E. Dave would like to have a showing of "It's Not Easy Being Green" in Reading at the the IMAX Theater, the 4th Sunday of the Month Indenpendent Film Festival. VII. National Annual Meeting A. Plans are under way and it has been suggested to occur in Detroit, MI, along with the US Social Forum event, at which they expect 10-15,000 people. T B. Workshops should be in line with Green values and could have Green Party speakers, although GP members could not speak on the Green Party, per se, but they can focus on issues and what the Green Party themselves have done, and will do concerning these issues. C. A good person to speak would be Cynthia McKinney, about Palestine, ie. Meeting adjourned 8:30 pm. Jessica Ashman Secretary (Jessica typed these notes, given to her from Randi.) |
